Demonstrations took place in several areas of the country raising concerns on the education sector, which is already facing a number of issues.
Attention was mainly focussed on the hunger-strike that took place opposite the Pahala Ogodapola Vidyalaya in Ridigama located in the Kurunegala District. This hunger-strike commenced on Friday against the decision taken to transform the Pahala Ogodapola Vidyalaya in Ridigama into a secondary school.
Tuesday was Day Five of the hunger-strike. A mother engaged in the hunger-strike was hospitalised after taking ill. Subsequently, the parents closed the gates of the school, while the teachers were still inside.
Later the police arrived at the location and freed the trapped school teachers.
Hiriwadunna Model Primary School in Habarana
A group of parents staged a demonstration opposite the Hiriwadunna Model Primary School in Habarana demanding the teacher vacancies for the Grade three section of the school be filled.
The parents pointed out that the teacher appointed to fill in the vacancy had been transferred two weeks after assuming office. The parents locked in the principal and the teachers inside the principals office, demanding a solution to this issue.
The teachers and the principal who were imprisoned in the office for nearly an hour were taken out after the OIC of the Habarana Police intervened.
Ratnasiri Royal College in Elpitiya
Teachers at the Ratnasiri Royal College in Elpitiya staged a protest against the an assault on a fellow teacher by a local politicians and another group when enrolling students for Grade one. The teachers pointed out that the suspects is yet to be apprehended.
They arrived at the Elpitiya Zonal Education Office in a protest march, however, the zonal education director was not in office at the time.
Bulutota Tamil Vidyalaya in Sooriyakanda
Another group of parents engaged in a demonstration opposite the Bulutota Tamil Vidyalaya in Sooriyakanda , Embilipitiya due to the lack of teachers at the school.
The demonstrators pointed out that there only eleven teachers in the school that provides education for over 500 children. The principal of the school also noted that there were vacant positions for teachers at the school for over a period of time.
Ashroff Primary School in Eravur
Another group of parents staged a demonstration demanding more teachers for the Ashroff Primary School in Eravur. They pointed out that,the school is yet to be given a teacher for English since the school was established.
