Bollywood superstar Priyanka Chopra, who is preparing to launch her music career on the world stage, says that ethnicity should not be a barrier when it comes to doing something different.
Priyanka is currently in the United Kingdom, promoting her career, and took time to meet with fans in London yesterday. Chopra first rose to fame in 2000, winning the Miss World beauty pageant and transitioning into Bollywood film.
The self-declared workaholic is one of the biggest stars to emerge in Indian film in recent years, with big budget franchises such as Krrish and Don.
She has also won plaudits for taking on unconventional roles, most recently playing an autistic woman in 2012’s Barfi!
Chopra’s step into Hollywood coincides with her foray into pop music.
One of her tracks, is the theme song for the American National Football League or NFL, leading critics to question the relevance of an Indian singer providing the theme song for one of America’s most popular sports.
Priyanka, has this to say to these critics.
“Whenever you try and do something different you’ll always have resistance. And, there has been, there have been stereotypes, there have been, you know, question marks of why should someone of my ethnicity be part of, you know, mainstream, like for example NFL. I got a bit of that because my first single is the theme song for NFL, which is called ‘In my city’ and features Will.i.am, and I got a little bit of resistance there saying, oh NFL is such an American sport and you’re not American and, how can, that makes no sense. And, some people can of course be offensive, but I guess I’ve been in the face of, you know, the public glare for a long time and I understand that there will be bouquets and brick bats no matter where you go, but I like to focus on the positive that I get.”
The two singles she has released so far have been all-star collaborations, with the song “Exotic” featuring rapper Pitbull, and “My City” with a cameo from Black Eyed Peas rapper Will.i.am.
