Former United National Party Western Provincial Councillor Shirantha Amarasekera who was arrested earlier Wednesday was placed in remand custody. He was arrested over an alleged assault on a police sergeant

The office of the Police Media Spokesperson said that the Former Western Provincial Councillor Shirantha Amarasekera  had allegedly assaulted the police sergeant on Wednesday morning in the Weligampitya area in Kandana.

The officer who was assaulted was attached to the Police Environment Unit. The injured police sergeant was admitted to the Ragama Teaching Hospital. Subsequent to being produced before the Negombo Courts, the Former Provincial Councillor was placed in remand custody until the 29th.
