It was just over a month ago that skeletal remains were discovered in Mannar, once a town affected by the war. Police Media Spokesperson SSP Ajith Rohana said that thirty nine human skeletons have been unearthed thus far.  He added that investigations will be handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department.

Thiruketheeswaram  is located 50 metres off the Mannar Sangupiddi Road. Workers came across human skeletal remains during the construction work to lay a water supply line on the road.

The human skeletal remains were unearthed on the side of the road leading to the Thiruketheeswaram Kovil on December 20, 2013. Subsequent to the discovery, excavations commenced in close proximity to the Thiruketheeswaram Kovil on the A32 Road in Mannar.

The excavation in the area is taking place under the supervision of the Mannar District Magistrate. When Newsfirst visited the excavation site on Monday, measures were taken to cover more ground.

Police Media Spokesperson SSP Ajith Rohana elaborated on the current status of the ongoing investigations.
