The Panadura Magistrate, released on bail, a suspect who was in remand custody for allegedly stealing a laptop and a few bottles of foreign liquor from the residence of parliamentarian Mangala Samaraweera.
Appearing on behalf of the suspect, President’s Counsel, Hemantha Warnakulasooriya submitted to court that Mangala Samaraweera had gifted the laptop to his client —with whom Mangala Samaraweera had sexual intimacy with for a long period of time.
The President’s Counsel also informed the court that as false charges has been leveled against his client, he be released on bail.
The Panadura Magistrate, after taking into consideration facts, released the suspect on two sureties amounting to Rs.25,000 each and a cash bail of Rs.5000.
The magistrate also ordered the Keselwatta Police to conduct an extensive investigation based on the affidavit submitted by the suspect’s spouse relating to the affair her husband and MP Samaraweera had.
President’s Counsel, Hemantha Warnakulasuriya said that if necessary investigations are not conducted into the affidavit, he requests that investigations be handed over to the Criminal Investigations Department.
The case will be taken up again on October 27.
