A rare species of white turtle worth over Rs.10 million rupees, had been robbed from the Kosgoda Turtle Research Institute.
The manageress of the institute, J.Badugodahewa said that the turtle had been robbed on Sunday night.
She further said that there were only two turtles in the research institute belonging to the rare white turtle species and it was one of them that had thus been taken away.
J.Badugodahewa said that several buyers had visited the Kosgoda Research Institute in the hope of purchasing the rare turtle.
She said that the turtle was kept locked in a water tank for security.
When News1st inquired about this matter from the Minister of Wildlife, Vijith Vijayamuni Soysa, he said that instructions has been given to the officer in charge of the Southern Province to take measures to apprehend the perpetrators.
News1st also made inquiry from Police Media Spokesperson, SSP Ajith Rohana and he stated that buyers were willing to pay 15 million Rupees in order to purchase such rare turtles.
He further added,
“The Kosgoda police have commenced investigations with regards to this disappearance. It has been reported that one and a half months ago a group was interested to buy the turtle and willing to pay 15 million rupees. Investigations have commenced to ascertain if the turtle was indeed stolen or otherwise.”
