All – rounder Shahid Afridi starred in Pakistan’s three-wicket win over Sri Lanka in the first T20 International played between the two countries at the Dubai Stadium on Wednesday.
Winning the toss, Pakistan skipper invited Sri Lanka to take first lease of the wicket.
The Sri Lankan batsmen failed to set off on a good start.
Mathews was dismissed for 50 runs while Lahiru Thirimanne managed 23 runs not out to steer Sri Lanka to 145 runs for 5 in their allotted 20 overs.
Mathews hit five boundaries and a 6 off 34 balls before getting out in the last over.
Skipper Dinesh Chandimal and Kumar Sangakkara chipped in with 22 and 21 runs respectively.
Batting in reply Pakistan lost Ahmad Shehzad in the third over but Mohamad Hafeez and Sharjeel Khan contributed with 32 and 34 runs.
Afridi hit three sixes and two boundaries to help Pakistan overcome a tough challenge from Sri Lanka who had taken the match to the final over with Pakistan needing six runs.
Afridi scored 39 runs, with a six off the last ball over A paceman Nuwan Kulasekara to give Pakistan a 1-nil lead.
