Who urged that the UNP Leadership Council be created?  Various views are being expressed in this regard. Speaking at a meeting for UNP members in Anuradhapura recently, Lakshman Kiriella, a member of the UNP Leadership Council, made the following comments.

He stated:

“Who has been requesting for a Leadership Council over the past one and a half years? If you watched Sirasa over the past two years,  what did they request for ? Girambe thero, Bopitiya Dhammissa Thero and Meetiyagoda Thero appeared on Sirasa and called for a Leadership Council.”

“Now we have granted it. We want to tell Sirasa that we have acted on the requests made by these monks through Sirasa. Support us, we are not angry with Sirasa. It was only Sirasa that aired speeches made by us in Parliament, we accept it. We have acted upon what was demanded by a member of the United Bhikkhu Front.  Ven. Girambe Ananda Thero notes that Ranil Wickremesinghe had agreed to implement eight proposals forwarded by the Bhikkhu Front.”

Venerable Girambe Ananda Thera, Adviser of  the United Bhikkhu Front made following statement on October 14, 2013

“Honourable Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe came here. He accepted the requests made by the United Bhikkhu Front regarding the future of our party.”

He promised that all future re-organisation activities of the party will take place as per the wishes of, and with the approval of the Maha Sangha…”

Although Lakshman Kiriella reitrerated that requests of the monks have been fulfilled, have they truly been fulfilled ?  However,  this is how Ranil Wickremesinghe and Daya Gamage rejected that they had agreed to accept the requests made by the theros.”

Daya Gamage  made following statement on October 28, 2013

“They gave the paper to the leader and then the monks expressed their views. We considered the views of the monks and submitted the proposal for a leadership council to the working committee.”

“Ranil Wickremesinghe does not have the power to agree to the proposals put forward by the monks. How can Ranil Wickremesinghe take the powers of the UNP Working Committee and speak for them? He does not have that right.”

“We have pointed, time and time again that the country needs both a strong government and a strong opposition to ensure that democracy prevails. Activists continue to speak out against the leadership of the UNP stating that they should step down, as the party has suffered constant election defeats and as the electoral base of the UNP has dwindled year after year.”
