The Joint Trade Union Coordination Centre says that the working masses of the country will be rallied together against the fraudulent budget.
The Centre made this statement at a press conference convened on Sunday. Speaking at the conference, Convenor of the Joint Trade Union Centre, Wasantha Samarasinghe said:“The highlight of this budget was that Rs.1200 will be added to the cost of living allowance of the government servant. We say that Rs.1200 is not enough. At the end of the month, a basket of goods cost for a family of four will be Rs.49,300. They are adding Rs.1200 to an allowance of that family which will be paying Rs.2633 in taxes a month. The expenditure for the President has increased by 70 percent compared to 2012. If the President’s expenditure can be increased, why can’t the salaries of the working masses be increased?”
General Secretary of the Ceylon Teachers Union, Mahinda Jayasinghe also expressed the following views:
“Funds for education have been slashed. That burden will also have to be borne by the working masses. Children need to be admitted to grade one, next year. A sum needs to be paid to the school for every single child. In addition, payments need to be made annually or monthly for the children who are studying from grade 2 and upwards. For things like, to make fences, paint the walls and even to buy brooms. Payments need to be made for all of these things. This burden will have to be borne by the working masses.”
