March 10, 2010: The government says the Secretary General of the United Nations, appointing a committee to advice the world body on Sri Lanka is a violation of the principles enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations.
Addressing the cabinet media briefing today, Minister G. L. Peiris said that as far as Sri Lanka was concerned, the country would very much like to work with the international community.
“We need their support. We welcome it. However, we have reservations about several aspects of the attitude of the international community towards Sri Lanka,” the Professor said.
Commenting on the Tamil Global Forum held in London recently, he said that the threat at the global level was something very real.
“It's not imaginary, it's not exaggerated, it's a very real threat. That is clearly demonstrated by recent events that has taken place.
“Take the Tamil Global Forum held in London recently. What are the resolutions arrived at at the conclusion of the deliberations. Goods that are produced in this country should not be bought by consumers in those countries. The third resolution which they adopted was that the right to self determination had to be recognised.
“Having banned the LTTE, they have proscribed the LTTE as an illegal, criminal organisation. Now these are the resolutions adopted at a meeting addressed by the British Foreign Secretary,” said Minister G. L. Peiris.
He also said that the aim of the opposition was not to win the election but not to let the government receive the two-thirds majority in parliament.
