July 31, 2010: The problems faced by the farmers with regard to selling their paddy must be addressed immediately, says the UNP MP Sajith Premadasa.
He made this statement addressing a function to declare open a preschool constructed in the Ambalanthota under the Jana Suwa programme.
“In districts including Hambanthota where there are a large number of paddy farmers, can they sell their paddy? Those residing in districts such as Hambantota who depend on paddy farming as a livelihood cannot sell their paddy.”
“A kilogram of paddy was to be purchased at Rs.28. But it's sad to say they cant even sell it for Rs.18 now. What is the reason for this? The present administration doesn't understand that you can't protect the farmers by just providing a fertilizer subsidy. It is the responsibility of the government to provide these farmers with a stable price for their products.” said the Sajith Premadasa.
