July 30, 2010: C. I. Gunasekara, a former captain of the Ceylon cricket team who led the side in 1960, died yesterday at the age of 90.
Born on the 14th of July 1920, C. I. Gunasekara began his cricketing career at his alma mater, Royal College Colombo.
C. I. Gunasekara first joined the Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC) team after ending his three years of cricket at Royal College Colombo.
He was also made an honorary member of the SSC for the yeomen service rendered to the club for several years.
Prior to making his test debut, this right hand batsman amassed 1,131 runs in 20 matches for the national side and also took 53 wickets as a promising leg spinner.
Displaying immense class with the willow, C. I. Gunasekara reached a milestone in his cricketing career when he made a double century against Pakistan.
