July 28, 2010: University students are on the streets protesting and in universities, lecturers are on strike. The higher education in the country is in jeopardy, says Tissa Attanayake, General Secretary of the United National Party (UNP).
He made these observations addressing a media briefing today.
“What is the state of the university structure in the country today? When evaluating the traits of intellectuals, the key area is the university system.
“On the one hand, it has come to a state where university students have come on to the streets and protesting, while on the other university lecturers have gone on strike.
“They have resorted to strike action demanding the government to keep to their pledges given in writing as well as in speeches delivered at various forums.
“These are not only the intellectuals and those who nurture them, but also those who will come out of the universities as intellectuals.
“As such, we appeal to the government not to let the university system in the country collapse,” said Attanayake.
