Supreme Court to Hear Cabraal’s Greek Bond Appeal

COLOMBO (News 1st): The Supreme Court ordered today to call the appeal petition filed by former Central Bank Governor Ajith Nivard Cabraal, on October 9.

He has requested to be acquitted from the case filed by the Bribery Commission regarding the 2012 Greek bonds case.

This case was filed before the Trial-at-Bar of the High Court over causing a loss to the government by investing Rs. 1.8 billion in Greek bonds.

The appeal petition challenging this was called today before a Supreme Court judge bench comprising Achala Wengappuli, Mahinda Samayawardhena, and Arjuna Obeyesekere.

President's Counsel Shanil Kularatne, the Additional Solicitor General appearing on behalf of the Attorney General, stated that notice regarding this matter was received yesterday.

The petitioner, the former Central Bank Governor, states that after filing a case against him in the Colombo High Court regarding the Greek bonds, the Bribery Commission withdrew the charge sheet and subsequently filed a case against him again before the Trial-at-Bar.

The appeal petition notes that this was done under different provisions of the Anti-Corruption Act, and although he raised a preliminary objection before the Trial-at-Bar asserting that filing the case in such a manner was contrary to the law, it was rejected.

Accordingly, the petitioner has requested the Supreme Court to invalidate the rejection of his preliminary objection and acquit him from the case.
