COLOMBO (News 1st): Former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga has issued a statement paying tribute to legendary singer late Dr. Nanda Malini, remembering her as a fearless artist who remained unwavering in her principles throughout her life.

In her statement issued today, Kumaratunga described Nanda Malini as an independent and courageous artist who used her music to speak against injustice, rather than to serve narrow personal or political interests.

Kumaratunga recalled the singer’s courage during periods of political turmoil, noting that Nanda Malini was among a small group of artists who opposed the removal of former Prime Minister Sirimavo Bandaranaike’s civic rights. She noted that the singer faced consequences for taking that stand, including difficulties with the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation.

She also remembered Nanda Malini’s unwavering support for Vijaya Kumaratunga during his arrest, at a time when fear had silenced many others. According to Kumaratunga, Nanda Malini stood by them during one of the most difficult periods, offering both courage and personal support.

The former President described Nanda Malini as a woman who never abandoned her principles, even in the face of adversity. She highlighted the singer’s simple way of life, strong character and determination to stand up for what she believed was right.

Kumaratunga further expressed her respect for Nanda Malini's contribution to Sri Lankan society, saying that criticism of the singer would not diminish the value of her legacy or the principles she stood for.

As Sri Lanka mourns the loss of one of its most influential artistic voices, Kumaratunga said Nanda Malini’s contribution would endure, not only through her music, but also through the courage and convictions that defined her life.

The statement was issued by Kumaratunga on August 21, following the passing of the veteran singer.
