Jailer and Two Prison Guards Arrested Over Inmate’s Death at Magazine Prison

COLOMBO (News 1st); Boralla Police have arrested a jailer and two prison guards on suspicion over the death of an inmate at the Colombo Magazine Prison.

Police said the arrests were made in connection with ongoing investigations into the incident, based on directives issued by the Inspector General of Police.

The inquiries are being conducted under the supervision of the Deputy Inspector General in charge of the Colombo Range, with officers from Boralla Police, the Colombo District Crime Division, and the Colombo South Divisional Criminal Investigation Unit jointly handling further investigations.

According to police, the incident occurred following an altercation involving two inmates and a prison guard inside the Magazine Prison.

All three individuals sustained injuries during the dispute and were subsequently admitted to the prison hospital for treatment.

One of the inmates later died while receiving medical care. The deceased has been identified as a 37-year-old resident of Navagampura.

Police confirmed that the deceased inmate had been held on remand in connection with possession of narcotics at the time of the incident.

Further investigations are continuing to determine the circumstances that led to the inmate’s death.
