COLOMBO (News 1st); Investigators are examining whether retired Major General Suresh Salley, the former Director of the State Intelligence Service, may have been the mastermind behind the Easter Sunday terror attacks, following his arrest this morning. Salley is now being questioned under a 72‑hour detention order.
“Here’s the situation. This is still an investigation. No matter how significant the arrest is, it is only one individual. Based on his statements and questioning, further investigations will determine whether he is the mastermind or whether someone else is above him,” said Sajeewa Medawatta, Senior DIG - Western Province at a press conference on Wednesday (25).
Suresh Salley was taken into custody in Peliyagoda by a team from the Criminal Investigation Department.
At the time of the 21 April 2019 attacks, Salley, then serving as a Brigadier, was attached to the Sri Lankan High Commission in Malaysia as an adviser. Before that appointment, he served as the Director of Military Intelligence.
Police said the arrest was made based on independent evidence uncovered during ongoing investigations. According to officials, the suspect has been handed over to the CID for further questioning.
Senior police officers noted that there is evidence suggesting a link between Salley and the attacks, which led to his arrest. However, they said the investigation is still ongoing and emphasised that further interrogation will determine whether he acted as the mastermind or whether another individual played a higher role.
Police also confirmed that his arrest was carried out under the Temporary Provisions of the Prevention of Terrorism Act, which allows for a 72‑hour detention on the authorisation of a Police Superintendent.
They said that within this period, if additional evidence emerges, a further detention order may be sought in accordance with the law.
Officials added that the nature of the next steps will depend on the findings gathered during these three days and that information relevant to the public will be communicated as the investigation progresses.
