COLOMBO (News 1st); International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva has praised the Sri Lankan government’s ongoing efforts to stabilise the country’s economy, following a meeting with Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya at Temple Trees.

During the discussion, Georgieva acknowledged the government’s commitment to restoring economic stability while simultaneously managing the country’s recent economic difficulties and natural disasters.

She specifically commended the administration’s response to the challenges posed by the ‘Ditwah’ cyclone, which left several communities economically vulnerable.

Prime Minister Amarasuriya, in turn, expressed appreciation for the IMF’s continuous assistance in helping Sri Lanka recover and return to normalcy in the aftermath of the disaster.

She emphasised that economic strengthening and development must ensure direct benefits reach groups most at risk of economic vulnerability, noting that inclusive recovery would be essential for long‑term national stability.

Following the meeting, Georgieva said that she discussed Sri Lanka’s resilient recovery after the cyclone and the path ahead, as well as investment in rural communities, education, digital connectivity, adding that greater space for private sector initiative will be critical to securing a bright future.
