COLOMBO (News 1st); Former Parliamentarian Sajin Vass Gunawardena appeared before the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) this morning (8) following a summons related to the ongoing investigation into the 2019 Easter Sunday terror attacks.
Police confirmed that Gunawardena was called in to provide a statement regarding telephone calls allegedly linked to prior warnings about the attacks.
The development follows earlier testimony by former President Maithripala Sirisena, who stated that he had received calls from an Indian intelligence service warning of the impending attacks.
Investigators revealed that during the probe into the relevant phone numbers, evidence surfaced indicating that the calls in question were made by Gunawardena.
CID officers are currently recording his statement in connection with these findings.
The Easter Sunday bombings, which targeted churches and hotels, remain one of the deadliest terror incidents in Sri Lanka’s history, and investigations continue to uncover new leads on accountability and prior intelligence.
