COLOMBO (News 1st); Pivithuru Hela Urumaya Leader Udaya Gammanpila has raised serious concerns over the government’s ongoing anti-narcotics operations, questioning whether the arrests are truly targeting the core of the drug trade or merely eliminating competition for certain protected traffickers.

Speaking to media, Gammanpila stated that while arresting drug traffickers is commendable, the public has yet to witness the expected consequences of a genuine crackdown.

“If the real intention is to allow their close allies in the drug trade to operate freely while only targeting their competitors, then in the coming days we should see drug prices triple, a shortage of narcotics, and young men and women collapsing from withdrawal,” he said.

He added that such a scenario would lead to a major social upheaval, with increased hospitalizations and rehabilitation admissions.

“But we haven’t seen any of that yet,” Gammanpila noted.

He also questioned the claim that the underworld is being dismantled, pointing out that shootings have not decreased. “They say drugs are being seized, but according to our information, there’s no shortage and prices haven’t gone up. I haven’t seen young people suffering due to a lack of drugs. If you have, please let us know,” he said.
