Leopard Killed in Maduru Oya: Indigenous Trio Linked to Killing

COLOMBO (News 1st); A suspect arrested in connection with the killing of a leopard inside the Maduru Oya National Park is scheduled to be produced before court today (5), according to officials from the Henanigala Wildlife Protection Office.

The arrest follows an incident in which a six-foot-long leopard was found killed within the park. 

Wildlife officers stated that three individuals from the indigenous community were allegedly involved in the incident. 

While attempting to apprehend the suspects, two of them reportedly fled by jumping into a nearby canal, leaving one in custody.

The suspects were allegedly found in possession of the leopard’s hide, which they had removed and were were attempting to transport at the time of the arrest. 

The body of the leopard has since been recovered by wildlife authorities.

Investigations are currently underway to determine whether the animal was killed by gunfire or blunt force, as the exact cause of death remains unclear.

The suspects are believed to be between 30 and 40 years old, and authorities suspect they may have fled from the Henanigala village area.

Efforts are ongoing to locate and apprehend the remaining individuals.
