COLOMBO (News 1st); The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) has strongly condemned the government’s alleged efforts to revoke privileges granted to former Presidents, calling it a vindictive and politically driven campaign aimed at undermining national leadership.
Speaking to the media, SLPP General Secretary Attorney-at-Law Sagara Kariyawasam emphasized that a President is a leader elected by the majority of the people, and must be able to make decisions without fear or personal concern for their future or family.
“In democratic nations, former heads of state are provided with protection and dignity after retirement, precisely because their role involves making difficult decisions that may expose them to future threats,” Kariyawasam said.
He accused the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP)-led government of attempting to politicize and weaponize public sentiment against former Presidents, including Mahinda Rajapaksa, by fostering resentment and stripping away institutional safeguards.
“This is not about protecting Mahinda Rajapaksa. The people of this country already stand with him. This is about ensuring that future Presidents can lead with courage and clarity,” he added.
