COLOMBO (News 1st); Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) Priyantha Weerasuriya has issued a strong statement reaffirming his commitment to eradicating corruption and misconduct within the Sri Lanka Police, emphasizing that public trust hinges on the integrity of law enforcement.
“Every action we take brings us closer to or further from the public,” Weerasuriya said. “If officers fail to perform their duties properly or expect personal gain in return, they not only tarnish their own reputation but bring disgrace to the entire service.”
The Acting IGP stressed that the police must remain impartial and professional, warning that any officer involved in corruption or drug-related activities will not be protected under his leadership.
“I will not shield or support any officer engaged in misconduct. Those addicted to drugs or involved in trafficking have no place in the Sri Lanka Police,” he declared.
Weerasuriya revealed that over 100 officers have already been dismissed during his tenure due to various forms of misconduct. He noted that while the police force comprises approximately 92,000 officers, even a small number of corrupt individuals can severely damage the institution’s credibility and the safety of society.
“Before we can clean society, we must first clean the police,” he added.
