COLOMBO (News 1st): Attention has been drawn to seeking police assistance in addressing incidents of ragging (Hazing) in universities.
This was discussed during a High level meeting held yesterday between university Vice-Chancellors and officials of the University Grants Commission (UGC).
Chairman of the UGC, Professor Kapila Senavirathne, said that attention was also given to the need for a proper legal framework to address such incidents.
Meanwhile, the four students arrested in connection with the death of a Sabaragamuwa University student are scheduled to be produced before the Balangoda Magistrate’s Court today. They were arrested by officers of the Criminal Investigation Department.
Four other students who were previously arrested in connection with the same incident have been remanded until the 16th of May.
Police reports indicate that the arrested individuals are third-year students from the Faculty of Technology at SUSL.
Investigations are continuing by several parties regarding the death of the second-year student of the same faculty.
Meanwhile, multiple investigations are underway into the recent death of a second-year student from the same faculty. Authorities are exploring possible links between the student’s death and ragging-related incidents.
