Local Government Election before March 10th

COLOMBO (News 1st) - The Election Commission met on Tuesday (3) afternoon in Colombo.

Commissioner General for the National Elections Commission Saman Sri Ratnayake speaking to News 1st said that the date to call for nominations for the Local Government Election will be announced on Tuesday (3).

The Elections Commission says it hopes to conduct the Local Government Election before the 10th of March.

The Elections Commission said that the elected Local Government Members will be announced via gazette before the 20th of March 2023.

Cabinet Spokesperson Minister Bandula Gunawardena responding to a question on attempts to delay the election citing the lack of funds said that though there is an issue in funds, the government policy related to an election is that all political parties must be prepared for the elections and have their nominations ready.

The Minister was speaking at the weekly Cabinet Media Briefing and also said that there is no process in the treasury, where funds left over from the previous year are moved to the next year.
