Public Servants protest against mismanagement

COLOMBO (News 1st); Several Government officers joined protests in and around Colombo, blaming the present Government for the current economic situation and demanding the resignation of the Prime Minister & President.

The Inland Revenue Department staff protested in front of their office premises on Monday (25).

Senior Commissioner of the Inland Revenue Department, Sarath Abesekara said that by 2019 the IRD collected Rs.1,250 Billion in Tax Revenue, but after the new Government was appointed the Tax Revenue dropped to Rs. 500 Billion in 2020, and by 2022 there was a reduction of Rs. 1,200 Billion.

He went on to note that during the same period Rs. 1.7 Trillion was printed, and if the due taxes were collected rather than awarding tax cuts to government associates, inflation would not have risen to its present levels.

Meanwhile, the Public Administration Division also staged a protest on Monday (25) citing the crisis and the mismanagement of the economy.

At the same time a protest was held in front of the Sethsiripaya premises in Battaramulla on Monday (25).
