One suspect identified for uploading obscene content

COLOMBO (News 1st): Sri Lanka Police have launched investigations to apprehend a suspect from Kandy who had been identified for uploading inappropriate and obscene content to cyberspace. The Police Children and Women Bureau is conducting further investigations with regard to video footage and photographs uploaded to cyberspace from Sri Lanka, with the situation being monitored around the clock, Police Spokesperson Senior DIG Ajith Rohana told News 1st on Saturday (Jul. 31). Accordingly, police officers have been deployed to gather information regarding such content including photographs and video footage in respect of Obscene Publications uploaded to cyberspace. During investigations, an individual in Kandy was identified to have uploaded 100s of photographs and videos that would be considered as Obscene Publications; the suspect will be arrested soon, Senior DIG Ajith Rohana noted. According to the Police Spokesperson, if an individual has uploaded video clips or photographs in respect of Obscene Publications concerning children, the police are able to trace such perpetrators through the online surveillance system. "Based on Sri Lanka's law, the circulation of such obscene content is an offence and if the particular video clips or photographs contain any sexual exploitation, sexual harassment or any other offence related to sexual abuse, the perpetrators will be dealt with the law, in addition to the law concerning Obscene Publication," Senior DIG Ajith Rohana emphasized. The Police Children and Women Bureau is conducting further investigations in this regard jointly with the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
