COLOMBO (News 1st) A small gap in a dam can cause great destruction. The residents of Hunupalagama, Anuradhapura are facing a similar issue, but the solutions that they received are unsatisfactory, to say the least. This dangerous situation was caused by a small gap in the bund of the Hunupalagama reservoir which is located in the area falling under the purview of the Galnewa divisional secretariat. The Hunupalagama reservoir had nourished many farmlands in the area and has a history of about 150 years. Residents of the area point out that as the reservoir has not been renovated in many years, a small gap in the bund has put the reservoir at risk of being destroyed. After the area residents had informed the Galnewa divisional secretariat an officer arrived to investigate the situation. Steps were taken to dig a temporary canal for the water of the reservoir to flow through, to ensure the security of the residents in the area. However, according to the area residents, this is not a viable solution. The area residents question the authorities as to when will they be given a viable solution to this issue.
