COLOMBO (News1st) - UPFA MP Wimal Weerawansa commenting on the delay on appointing the President of the Court of Appeal noted that although the President has already nominated several names the Speaker, the Prime Minister, and the constitutional council refuses to accept the proposed names. He said that this refusal is because those individuals are not their NGO goons. Weerawansa said that even when the most senior judge was nominated as the President of the Court of Appeal that it was rejected on two occasions. While Speaker Karu Jayasuriya holds Chairmanship of the constitutional council through the power vested in him, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and Opposition leader Mahinda Rajapaksa are appointed to the council through their official capacity. Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe has been appointed as the President's representative while Chamal Rajapaksa was appointed as the Opposition Leaders representative. Minister Thalatha Athukorala has been appointed as the Prime Minister's Representative. MP Bimal Ratnayaka has been appointed as the minority party representative. Dr. Jayantha Dhanapala, Ahmen Javid Yusuf, and Naganathan Selvakumaran are also in the constitutional council representing the civil activists.
