More rain expected over the weekend

Colombo (News1st) - Spill gates of a number of reservoirs have been opened due to heavy rains experienced in catchment areas. According to Asst. Director of the Disaster Management Center (DMC) Pradeep Kodippili the spill gates of the Kothmale, Lakshapana, Canyon, Castlereigh and Mawussakele reservoirs have been opened. Kodippili called on residents living in close proximity to the Kelani River to remain vigilant. The Met. Department predicts windy and showery condition to continue over the island on Saturday (Aug 18th) as well. Showers or thundershowers are expected to occur at times in Central and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in the Kalutara district. Fairly heavy falls of above 75 mm can be expected at some places. Several spells of showers have also been forecast for the Southern and North-western provinces as well as in the Colombo and Gampaha districts. Strong gusty winds up to 50-60 kmph can be expected over the island particularly in the Central, North-western, North-central, Eastern, Southern, Sabaragamuwa and Western provinces.
